Document #1035 THE "PORTS OK" TEST (Note: Management Access Security will be needed for all of the procedures in this document. To place the call accounting in Management Access mode pressthe MANAGEMENT ACCESS Key followed by the code number) TOOLS suggestion: Screwdriver TEST suggestion: Do a "Ports OK" test to verify that the SMDR and PRINTER ports on the call accounting system are working. Locate the two connectors that are on the same gray cord off the back of the call accounting system. They are usually marked, "PRINTER"(male) and "SMDR"(female). Unplug these connectors from the printer and the telephone system. Plug the two connectors into each other forming a loop at the end of the cable. With connectors plugged together forming this loop press the following keys: 1) Press MANAGEMENT ACCESS KEY 2) The system access code number ENTER 3) Press MODE SET KEY "0" and ENTER (very important) 4) Press PROGRAM KEY "88" 5) ENTER as you press the ENTER key watch the display of the call accounting system for the words; "PORTS OK"You may repeat Program 88 if necessary. If the words,"PORTS OK" appear in the display it means that the call accounting system has sent a specific programmed message out the printer connector on pin #3 and that exact message has been received through the SMDR connector on pin #3. The message was properly transmitted and received both ports are verified as OK. Re-connect the cables several factors could be causing the Call accounting not to process calls: 1) Since the Phone system is sending data on a serial port the speed of the transmission "baud rate" must match exactly. If it does not calls will not be processed. 2) The cable between the Phone system and call accounting "SMDR Connector" might be defective so call information can not be received. 3) The Phone system might not be sending a signal. Some phone systems need to have that feature turned on "enabled" via software programing. 4) The Phone system might have suffered a power surge that damaged the port responsible for transmitting the signal. Even though the Phone system is functioning normally this can happen. If the words, "PORTS OK" do not appear in the display it means: 1) INPUT/OUTPUT ports are not functioning properly. 2) The connectors were not plugged together. 3) The operating mode of the call accounting is other then "0".
