President's Message: Be Prepared
In April’s Newsletter, we discussed longevity – staying power! The real message under all these issues of the day is that cyclical hassles do end if you have staying power (like TEL and TEL products)! TEL thinks we should all work together with the best, with those that have staying power since we all know that good business is based on long-lasting relationships! But, remember, this is NOT the first recession, nor will it be the last - but it will end, so stay with staying powers!
Pearl S. Buck, first female Nobel Laureate for Literature said, “If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.” George Santayana, rational ethics philosopher, poet and novelist, said something like, “Those who do not study the past are doomed to repeat it.” And, your favorite in these times, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!” I note unaudited information passed along recently:
- In 1819, land values plummeted, banks and businesses failed, and unemployment in Philly rose to 75%;
-
In the 1830s, land speculation led to no gold/silver payments, market down 33%, and 343 of 850 banks closed;
-
In 1857, an Ohio bank collapsed, along with other bank and business failures, causing U.S. unemployment rates to rise;
-
In 1873, Jay Cooke & Co., banking firm, failed, and Northern Pacific RR and then most U.S. RRs failed;
-
In 1893, a massive credit run led to the failure of some 15,000 companies and 500 banks;
-
In 1907, the market fell 50%, leading to an unprecedented number of bankruptcies;
-
In 1927, the Great Depression really began with declining real estate values – market fell by 90%!
The downturns that have occurred since pale in comparison, but the lesson is clear: be prepared, SAVE, prioritize, and select goals, friends, business partners and investments VERY carefully, and stay with the good guys - those with staying power! And stay away from RRs and only invest (especially in real estate!) if you can afford to lose it all!! Good hunting and buy TEL!

Tech's Corner: Support Policy Changes
For 30 years, TEL provided free technical support to its dealers, with an understanding that they would buy, sell, and support TEL systems. Since TEL now has some 50,000 installations, TEL can no longer provide free support for all these systems or affiliated dealers.
With this economy challenging us all, as well, TEL must change its policy and only provide free support for 30 days after a new system is shipped. Dealers who purchase at least one system every 30 days will continue to receive free continuous support. Otherwise, dealers to pay a discounted hourly rate of $75 or pay $160 for a 4-hour support plan (only $40/hour and hours good for one year). Dealers with a Gold or Silver status are eligible for additional discounts.
